RFID Alliance Lab

Industry Assistance

Companies Managing Secure Facilities

Our assistance included measuring the performance of item-level passive UHF RFID tags placed on consumer electronic products, specifically, cell phones. The application was to use RFID tags to keep unauthorized cell phones from restricted areas. The company requested our assistance in testing the accuracy of readers detecting cell phones on a person's body. See Technical Report ITTC-FY2006-TR-40980-01 for our analysis of the application and possible solutions and alternatives.

Seknion, Inc.

Tested a technology for Read Zone shaping by using additional scrambling signal to create a narrow read zone. We provided them with an assessment of this technology and an adaptation to detect direction of movement through the portal.

Tracking Metal Assets

Many companies have a critical need to track millions of large metal containers. We are trying to provide a cost efficient way to track them by

  • Assessing the performance of commercial inlays and Adamas (the tag designed at KU)
  • evaluating the impact of encasing tags in plastic and placing them near metal

Assistance to Tag Vendors

  • Introducing a new tag and antenna technology to the market
  • Evaluating from a technical perspective whether there is sufficient benefit for bringing a new class tag antenna design to the market
  • Consulting with local companies
